Smart Science YouTube video – working scientifically

The Smart Science YouTube videos

The Smart Science YouTube channel offers a range of videos which talk you through areas that are new to the KS3 Science Programme of Study. They offer hints and tips on how to tackle these new topics and show demonstrations and investigations that you can do in the classroom.

If you are working on the new PoS this term with your students, the video below offers a fresh approach to explaining the concept of working scientifically.

Smart Science – Working scientifically

Working scientifically has replaced How Science Works in the new KS3 science curriculum and students now need to understand a range of new science terms. In this video we are taken through how to plan a simple science experiment – what variables affect how quickly sugar dissolves, using the new terminology.

Extra ways to use the video

This investigation is a good way to introduce the terms to your students because it is an experiment that they will be familiar with from KS2. Ask them to write a method (or supply them with a simple one) and ask them to discuss: The independent, dependent and control variables used, what measuring equipment they will use and why. They can check their answers by watching the video.
