Petals, seeds, fruit, even stamens – we use different parts of the reproductive structures of a plant for many uses. In this homework activity, students are asked to find out what parts of a flower or fruit have been used in a fruit cake, before finding some more examples from their home.
Student instructions
- Take a look at the diagrams below which shows the structures in a flower and a fruit.
2. We eat many types of fruit and seed but did you know that parts of the flower are also edible, or used to make edible items.
Here is a recipe for a delicious cake. First, write down all the ingredients that you can spot that are made from part of a flower or fruit. Then, identify which part was used.

Rub butter into flour until it looks like fine breadcrumbs, add chopped almonds, sultanas, ground cloves and ground nutmeg.
Warm some milk and add two strands of saffron. Leave to infuse then mix in eggs, milk, honey and rose water. Add to the dry ingredients, put into a cake tin and bake for approximately 1 hour.
3. Next, see how many more flower or fruit items you can find in your house. You can look in places other than the kitchen.
