JOB TITLE:   Secondary Publisher (Schools Market)
REPORTS TO: Publishing Director

This post involves developing our already successful Secondary Schools list, and identifying new curriculum opportunities within the market - developing creative, innovative, market-driven resources to meet the needs of the end user.

The candidate will have 2 - 3 years experience in educational publishing ideally in Key Stage 3, be passionate about education and show flair and creativity in developing and building a successful list. Hands on classroom experience will be advantageous.

Job Description
JOB TITLE:   Secondary Publisher (Schools Market)
REPORTS TO: Publishing Director  
DEPARTMENT:  Publishing – UK Schools
LOCATION:   Cambridge – office-based

Summary: To lead our publishing for the UK Secondary schools market.
The role will include developing and delivering this year’s publishing programme and researching, planning, commissioning and developing product for 2008 and beyond.

Coming with a strong track record of successful commissioning and product development, you will commission engaging and profitable educational resources.

You will manage projects, develop new titles, identify new market opportunities and contribute to future publishing strategy.

You will be accountable for the commercial success of your list.

This position will involve:

  • Setting up and managing multiple print and digital learning projects, ensuring products are delivered within quality parameters, on time and to budget.
  • Liaising with the software department to create detailed, functional specifications for all digital aspects of the projects.
  • Commissioning, briefing and managing internal and external development teams (including authors, permissions, designers, illustrators, editors, consultants, etc).
  • Preparing manuscripts for design, working alongside series editors to ensure consistency and educational quality of authored resources.
  • Continuing to develop a solid knowledge of the UK secondary schools market (including e-learning) - through visiting schools, observing teaching practices, attending focus groups, researching topical and future educational issues attending conferences and completing competitor analysis.
  • Using this knowledge to create new product proposals and build a successful list.

The ideal candidate will be educated to degree level and be able to demonstrate:

  • An understanding of the print and digital publishing processes, having at least three years’ publishing experience, preferably gained within the education market.
  • Good market knowledge and excellent project management and interpersonal skills.
  • Commissioning skills, enthusiasm, organisational skills and high levels of commitment.
  • Strategic and creative thinking skills.
  • Knowledge of curriculum software development.
  • Strong negotiation and problem solving skills.

JOB TITLE:   Programmer
REPORTS TO: Software Development Manager
DEPARTMENT:  Publishing – UK Schools
LOCATION:   Cambridge – office-based

Summary: We are looking for an enthusiastic and forward-thinking Flash programmer, to join our Software Development team, to create educational activities, tools and applications.

Able to work within a small team, you should have a minimum of 2 years demonstrated experience with Flash/ActionScript, XML and OO programming.

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate expertise in:

  • ActionScript 2 (with experience of ActionScript 3)
  • Object-orientated programming and methodologies in a Flash environment (i.e. use of classes, etc)
  • Developing Flash games, activities and applications
  • Using XML data in Flash movies

The candidate should ideally be able to demonstrate these desired, but not essential, skills:

  • Experience with SQL, PHP and Javascript.
  • An ability to work independently, within a small team, within a small office environment (also alongside internal and external development teams, including designers, illustrators and other programmers).
  • (Once set up, with Software Development Manager) managing own schedules, and seeing projects of varying sizes from development to completion.
